4 Home Maintenance Tips to Protect Your Roof from Roof Rat Infestation

Your house is too precious to just let savage parasites host on it and wreck it. If there's a single kind of house pest that comes to mind right now, bet they're roof rats!

Usually called black rats, though not all of them are black based on their diets, roof rats inhabit high areas of buildings and upper portions of houses. The name says so much about these rodents -- they love staying in, on and around roofs! And that's just downright bothersome in all ways for homeowners.

Roof rats do not care at all if they are chewing on those precious shingles or leaving scratches on the new roof gutters. They will munch on them because that's what they simply do! More unfortunately, not only are these parasites after your roof’s destruction, but their wastes can spread disease-causing viruses at home too.

Don't think twice! Be wiser than these speedy rats. Check out these 4 home maintenance tips to protect your roof from roof rat infestation!

1 - CLEAN YOUR ROOF. Remove materials rats may use as nests.

Many homeowners overlook the importance of cleaning their roofs just because they do not see what's up there. This is one of the reckless human-role-involved reasons why roof rats get the chance to visit people’s dwellings and even stay there!

The smartest and most responsible technique to make your roof is an unattractive place for roof rats is proper sanitation! Regular roof checkup is essential, so you are aware when it's time to tidy up the topmost space of your house. Better, schedule a regular general roof cleaning by a hired roof sanitation expert or just by yourself, with your family too.

Clean the roof well, making sure that there are no materials in gutters, rafters, dormers (and just anywhere on the roof!) which roof rats may use as nests. When roof rats see clutter on roofs, they are not trash to them but an opportunity for habitation. Rubbish like dirty cardboards, worn-out woods, thrown-away sheets of paper and old straws are interesting items for roof rats because they can utilize them as their “pleasant” nests. See to it that you remove these and the like from the roof, so that roof rats will not have a strong magnet!

2 - BLOCK RAT ENTRYWAYS. Seal them with wood, mesh or caulk.

The most popular specialty of roof rats is getting into any building, structure or furniture through entryways bigger than a nickel. They typically consider pipes as ideal pathways.

To hamper roof rats from staying inside your home, install screens on windows, ducts and slits which can be covered. These parasites are unfortunately excellent in making way through openings under weak wraps, in destroying cavity lids and in wedging themselves into cracks. That sounds hopeless at some degree, but don't be reluctant to perform your best efforts to block roof rat passages using tough wood, quality mesh or caulk.

3 - REMOVE FOOD SOURCES ON ROOFS. Clean up so they won’t attract.

Besides insects, snails, slugs and tiny birds, these roof rats eat stems, leaves, fruits, nuts and seeds. That's why they love nesting over roofs with fallen grubs such as these.

Remove food sources on the roof by cleaning them up, so they won't attract roof rats. Your roof may not be very dirty, but innocent fruits might be on them, and they will catch the attention of rats for sure!

If they discover your roof as a spot where their food can be commonly found, they will remember it and the pathway to it. That's when they will be your regular unwanted guests up there with or without your knowledge.

4 - TRIM TREES NEAR YOUR ROOF. Keep them away.

Roof rats have outstanding and commendable running and climbing skills (well, commendable among themselves at least and not for humans). That's why they love roofs, and that's why they take advantage of that ability.

Fruit trees fascinate these rodents so much and so do the roofs nearby them. Roof rats can go to the roof through these trees. It's a practical track for them, isn't it? But totally not for you! Trim every tree branch close to your roof or to your house, so you can prohibit this competent roof rat access.
