Construction is a vast field, with many large and niche fields. Life as a civil engineer on-site can get monotonous. You can get stuck working for a long time on the same things and on similar sites.
I’d like to tell you how I found a way to research out of my comfort zone and a resource named Olous that helped me understand complex construction technology with small simple videos.
I hit a patch in my career not too long ago, when I was working on very similar housing sites for months, with no variation. This is when I realized that although site work gives you experience and real-life lessons, it cannot help you update your knowledge, especially in construction technology and research.
Technologies like AI, robotics, and smart materials in construction industry are yet to reach small and mediums sites, where maximum civil engineers like me work.
But we should still be aware of the developments happening in these fields, on the chance that we get to work on a site that supports these systems one day!
My research about new technology introduced me to 3D printing construction. This is a concept that appears very Sci-Fi and futuristic at first glance! Even small 3d printers work wonders! And imagining a 3D printer as big as a house was impossible for me when I first read about it!
The technology also looked very intimidating and understanding the concept was difficult- this is natural, as the technology is really complex and the machines intricate.
But that was when I came across an interview series called Bridging the Gap that interviewed construction professionals that were working in 3D printing!
After watching 2 or 3 videos, I really developed an interest in the field. This Bridging the Gap interview show was conducted by Olous.
I decided to check out Olous on a whim, and I am glad that I did! Olous is a mobile app that connects people from construction with each other and with businesses in the field.
It also has videos that explain the most basic and the most complex construction technology concepts in small, simple to understand videos.
Bridging the Gap by Olous interviews technical leads and CEOs of big companies in construction that are working on new technology and its practical applications! The speakers explain their work in detail and with passion, such that it’s very easy to understand. I have also found many good companies and startups to follow through this series. Some interviews with 3D printing companies helped me understand the concept the best since it was explained by industry leaders in the field itself!
Olous and Bridging the Gap is a great resource for many people like me. 3D printing is just one field that they have explained in detail. I will be exploring even more technologies through them.
Feel free to contact me if you want information about 3D printing, how to start learning about new technologies, and Olous App.
I am a curious person at heart and love to learn and discover new technologies and basically keep myself updated with the latest developments in our Industry. Unfortunately, most platforms have Ad based information for their viewers, and I get sick of it. On Olous I have found several short videos, that keep in touch with my attention span, on various subjects of my interest, like, 3D Printing, AI in Construction, Green technologies, Sustainability (my favourite!) and so on… The information given in the videos is succinct, to my taste and gives me a quick understanding on the subject, to encourage me to explore more. Olous has a huge list of videos that you can either browse on OTV or use Search to find it, as per your interest. I also use their Clip and Boards feature to curate information in Boards which I can use and refer to in future.
I strongly recommend my fellow Construction Industry students and professionals to use the platform and stay in touch with the latest developments in construction, if you have the curiosity factor like me.
